When we think of posture, the advice to 'stand up straight' likely echoes in our minds. Poor posture, a common habit, can lead to headaches and tension in the shoulders and back. While massages provide temporary relief, cultivating good posture is key for lasting comfort and well-being. Take the following tips into account when trying to improve your posture.
1. Keep your shoulders back and relax
Those catwalk coaches from back in the days were right in one thing; walk as if you have a book balanced on your head. This trick helps improve your posture. Adjust your position until you can feel the weight centered on each of your palms. This is your optimal seated position. Your feet should be flat on the floor facing forward and your thighs parallel to the floor. Finally, find a supportive chair and make sure that your computer monitor is on eye level.
4. Take enough breaks when you have desk job It is recommendable to stand up and stretch every hour when you are sitting at a desk for long periods. These breaks are also good for your health. If you forget the time or have trouble making time for a short break, try setting an alarm or take a stroll after each cup of coffee or tea to loosen up your muscles.
5. Maintain a good posture when sleeping Provide support for your back by using pillows. An extra pillow would be ideal because you can use it as support to your back and you can also place it behind or between your knees. It is best to lay on your back or your left side. Try to keep your head at the same level as your spine. Lastly, your mattress should be one that lets you sleep and rest comfortably. Flip your mattress once in a while and make sure to replace it every ten years.
6. Do exercises to improve posture Your core muscles are essential for your posture. Firming your core muscles can be achieved by for instance stretching, TRX training, Yoga and Pilates. Choose for strength training over Cardio to improve your core muscles. Key to improving your posture is to stay active.
